FAQ

General Candle Care + Wick Trimming

  • Trim the wick to ¼” before lighting every time!  This makes all the difference in the longevity and clean burning of your candle. A long wick burns much too hot and will both use up the candle more quickly and create soot.  Use a wick trimmer or use nail clippers to get a close cut!

  • Burn your candle for up to 3-4 hours at a time.  On your very first burn, allow the candle to burn for at least 2 - 3 hours to achieve a full melt pool (melted wax near or touching the edges of the container). This prevents the wax from building up and possibly tunneling during future use.

  • Never leave a candle burning unattended or within reach of a draft, pets, or small children.

  • If the flame seems high or the container is too hot while burning, simply extinguish the flame, let it cool down, trim the wick and restart!

What are Scent Notes?

A candle has three types of notes: top notes, middle notes, and base notes.  The "top note" is the first scent you ‘experience’ when the candle is first lit or when you smell the candle while it's unlit.

The "middle notes", also be called "heart notes", are the scents you experience after the top note has faded a little.

Finally, you have the base notes, which are the scents that are revealed as the candle is lit and burning with a full melt pool (top layer is melted).  It can take up to an hour or so for this to occur.  So the true and actual scent of the candle?  That would be the mix of the middle notes and base notes.

How long will my candle last?

  • Candles that are 10-12oz will last around ~70-80+ hours and are well suited for larger, open areas in your home or studio

  • Candles that are 8-9oz will last ~50+ hours and are well suited for small-medium sized areas in your home or studio

  • Candles that are 3-7oz will last ~20-40+ hours and are great for bathrooms, bedside tables and smaller, cozy spots in your home

Why Olive Oil Wax?

It was extremely important to me to make good quality, clean and safe candles and in researching wax I found that Olive Oil wax was the best out there. It is a plant-derived, vegan wax with a creamy white appearance and gives an evenness of burn and wax consumption. Our wax at Buona Cera Candle Co is gluten free, toxin free, paraben free, and phthalate free. This wax is FDA approved so you have peace of mind while using in your home or office.

Why is the wax you use important?

Most candles have a wax blend, most commonly you will see a soy-paraffin blend. Paraffin is the most widely used wax for a lot of candles because of it’s low cost and optimal scent throw (how much you smell both when the candle is lit and when it’s cool). Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum as a byproduct of the refining process and tends to cause more concerns in the long run.  Therefore the thought of these candles being “clean” is a tad misleading. In an effort of Buona Cera Candle Co to carry the cleanest products as we can, we went the route of using natural olive oil wax!

Can I reuse my candle vessel? How?

Yes!  We would love for you to reuse your vessel after you use your candle.

Here are some ways we love to reuse our Buona Cera vessels: Refill with another candle from Buona Cera, use for bathroom accessories, desk accessories, pencil holder or a mini planter (make a drainage system inside or drill a hole).

How to Refill Your Vessel:

~ Loosen up edge of old wax with a spoon & lift out wax. use spoon to remove old wick/wick clip
~ Wipe out any remaining wax with a dry paper towel. Unwrap refill & drop into vessel
~ Light & enjoy your new candle!
* Do not attempt to pour hot water into the vessel to remove wax. This will not work the same way it does with glass and ceramic vessels. Our olive oil wax is soft enough to take out without heating
* No need to put in the freezer to get wax out ...the spoon method should lift it out in a single disc!
* Save your leftover wax to put in a wax melter!
